CHAPTER TWELVE

GABRIEL

We are led to the emergency room, and there, lying on a stretcher, is David. My heart clenches at the sight of his pale face and closed eyes. Dr. Leroy, a trusted pediatric surgeon, stands beside him, closely examining the young boy.

I approach Dr. Leroy, my voice trembling with concern. “Leroy, what's going on? How’s David?”

Dr. Leroy looks up with a grave expression. “Gabriel, it's not good. David sustained a significant head injury when he fell. The impact has caused some damage to his brain.”

My heart sinks at his words. “How big of a damage are we talking about?”

Dr. Leroy explains, “The injury has caused swelling in his brain, which is preventing him from regaining consciousness. If we can’t reduce the swelling, we might need to consider surgical intervention.”

My mind races, and my heart aches for Hope, who stands nearby. Her face is etched with fear and worry. I can’t imagine the pain she must be feeling. It's almost too much to bear. Considering her harsh brush-off on the sail, I can imagine how she feels.

“Please, do everything you can to help David,” I say to Dr. Leroy. My voice is steady despite the turmoil within me.

His eyes fill with determination, and he nods. “I'll gather the medical team, and we'll start treatment immediately.”

Hope watches, her eyes filled with a mixture of despair and hope, as David is wheeled into the emergency room. I watch her grapple with her emotions as she makes a silent plea, a mother's desperate plea, for her child's survival.

The medical team works tirelessly to assess David's condition, and I find a moment to step over to Hope. She looks up at me, her eyes full of anguish, and I place a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Hope, we will do everything in our power to help David. He's a strong young boy, and we have a skilled team here. Keep holding onto that Hope. We'll get through this.”

Her eyes meet mine, and for a brief moment, I see a glimmer of reassurance. I'm certain she knows we're all fighting for David's life. But I also see a glint of guilt in her eyes. She must be blaming herself.

Back in the emergency room, the atmosphere is tense as the medical team works diligently. The doctor allowed me to come in, and I couldn’t be more grateful. We race against time to reduce the swelling in David's brain, and I assist where I can, providing support and guidance to the team.

Hours pass, and David's condition remains unchanged. It's a daunting challenge, and the weight of responsibility bears down on all of us. The room is filled with a sense of purpose as well as a collective determination to save David.

After a while, I go back out to find Hope waiting patiently at the reception. I walk to her again and approach cautiously. “Hope. We'll get through this. It's not your fault.”

Hope, however, remains quiet. She looks as if the weight of the world is resting upon her shoulders, rendering her speechless.
